10 Reasons I Value the AABC Birth Institute
Lesley Rathbun, MSN, CNM, FNP - AABC President

As we approach the 11th annual AABC Birth Institute in Anchorage early next month, I had the opportunity to reflect on the reasons I value this conference so much and make it a priority to attend every year. Yes, I'm the president so, of course, it's important I participate.  However, as a birth center owner I also value the experience for my staff, both administrative and clinical. Here's why:

  1. Sharpen the Saw.  Stephen Covey, author of highly-acclaimed books on success in business lists it as his seventh habit of highly effective people. The idea is sometimes you have to take a break from the routine of your work to sharpen your skills. A dull axe won't cut a tree as effectviely as a sharp one.
  2. Meet Experts and Influencers Face to Face.  The Birth Institute is a gathering place for experts who support our model of care. It is a unique opportunity to meet face-to-face and have personal contact with a variety of birth experts.
  3. Networking Opportunities.  You have the opportunity to mix and mingle, form new relationships, and strengthen existing ones  Over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine you could make a connection that could benefit your birth center.
  4. New Tools, New Tips, and Tactics.   The Exhibit hall is an opportunity to find out what new tools and products are available and to get tips and tactics to make the most of what the vendors are offering.
  5. Learning in a New Space - Break Out of Your Comfort Zone.  The reason so many business have off-site meetings is to get out off a rut. Working in the same building, drinking out of the same coffee cup, sitting in the same chair can prevent fresh thinking and new ideas. For some, attending a conference could be outside their comfort zone. Breaking out of your comfort zone could be just what you need to spark new ideas.
  6. Greater FocusHave you been thinking about making changes to improve your services but are not sure how or where to start? Attending the education sessions can help get you moving and focus on your plans.
  7. The Energy of Like-Minded Individuals.  Everyone who attends the Birth Institute is there because they have passion for improving maternity care and growing birth centers. Renew and refresh your passion and commitment from the energy of your peers.
  8. The Serendipity of the Random Education SessionSome of the best sessions I have attended have been the ones I didn't have on my radar as a must-go-to. I never would have sought out the learning opportunities gained without randomly picking a session to attend.
  9. Invest in Yourself.  Yes, conferences are expensive, but they are an investment in yourself, your career, and your business. You are worth the price and the opportunity to learn and better your birth center is invaluable.
  10. Have Fun!  Last but not least is having fun! You never know what the hosting birth center will surprise you with. Who knew I would learn to throw a rope at a birth center conference? Enjoy the culture of a new city, tasting their unique foods and seeing the sights is entertaining and expands your life experiences. Staying in a nice hotel, swimming in the pool, or relaxing with a cocktail in the bar are always fun and relaxing. The Foundation Gala event is the premier birth center fun night event and always a great time and such a worthy cause to celebrate birth centers and raise funds to serve more families.

I hope to connect with you at the Birth Institute in Anchorage next month.
