About the Presenters

Maureen Darcey, CNM

Maureen Darcey, CNM
Maureen is a birth center pioneer. For thirty years, she has advocated at the local, state, and national levels for midwifery and the birth center model of care. She began her midwifery career at the Chatham Family Birth Center in Siler City, North Carolina in 1981. In 1995, she founded the Women's Birth & Wellness Center in Chapel Hill where she prioritized making the birth center option available to the poor and other underserved populations. Under her leadership, the center has grown to over 450 births annually and is a model for birth centers nationwide. Maureen also serves on the AABC How to Start a Birth Center Workshop faculty.

Alisa Voss Godfrey, LM, CPM
Alisa is the clinical director and owner of San Antonio Birth Center. Since completing a formal direct-entry midwifery apprenticeship and academic program in 1993, Alisa worked in varying capacities, including as a sole proprietor and partner in home-birth practices and as a staff midwife in a freestanding birth center. In 2009, she became the owner and clinical director of the San Antonio Birth Center and is delighted to offer alternatives to families seeking out-of-hospital birthing options in her community.
