August is the ideal time to connect with your legislators

Congress and most state legislatures are now on a month long recess until Labor Day. The dog days of August provide a great opportunity to invite them and/or their staff to visit your birth center and learn about your midwifery services.
Our education efforts are never done. Did you know that in 2013 there are more than 100 new members of Congress? And, staff in these legislators' offices have a high turn-over rate. The same is true at the state level. It is essential that we all take time to invest in educating our policymakers about birth centers and midwifery care.

I'm ready, how do I help? Start by calling your elected officials' home office to invite your representative/senator to visit your birth center. If they are not available, be sure to schedule a visit from their staff.
When they visit, be sure to have handouts on your services, statistics (if available), and the National Birth Center Study II (download the NBCSII Fact Sheet and/or the NBCSII article), and the AABC Strong Start Grant announcement.
This is a great publicity opportunity for you and your elected official. Be sure to take photos and send them to your local paper and AABC. Don't forget social media too.
