Road Map to Revision: AABC Standards for Birth Centers

Road Map to Revision: Where are we now?

Revising the AABC Standards for Birth Centers

The Standards Committee has been working diligently for more than a year and a half to bring you a more efficient, streamlined and clearer document. For those of you that have been following along faith-fully, thank you. For those of you that are new to this process, here’s a short recap:

  • November 2014: AABC members commented on what they would like to see changed in the current standards.

  • January – August 2015: The Standards Committee met regularly to review those comments and revise the standards.

  • August – October 2015: Draft version of the revised standards was made available to AABC members online and they were asked to comment. Members of the Standards Committee presented an overview of the revisions via webinar to guide members through the changes.

  • October 2015: At AABC Birth Institute, we held two important meetings: 1) a meeting of Standards Committee and experts and 2) an open forum for member review and comment. The meeting with experts gathered representatives from organizations across the birth industry including:
    • American Academy of Pediatrics
    • American College of Nurse Midwifery
    • American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
    • Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric & Neonatal Nurses
    • Childbirth Connection
    • Coalition for Improving Maternity Services
    • Human Rights in Childbirth
    • Improving Birth
    • Midwives Alliance of North America
    • National Association of Certified Professional Midwives
    • Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Also invited but unable to attend were the National Association of Birth Centers of Color and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

AABC members in attendance at the Birth Institute also had the opportunity to attend an open forum about the Standards and provide both written and verbal feedback to the Standards Committee.

  • November – March 2016: Standards Committee met regularly for a second in-depth review of the Standards. This included review of comments received from members and at the meeting of experts.

  • April 2016: Final draft document ready for AABC membership review and comment.  Comment period will end May 1. View now>>

  • May 2016: Standards Committee meets, reviews comments, makes further revisions.

  • Late May 2016: Final document of revisions is published for AABC membership with electronic voting.

Take time to review the Standards and offer your comments to the Standards Committee. Your continued active involvement keeps AABC the premier birth center organization that you have come to rely on.
