Freestanding Birth Centers + Midwives:
Essential Services During the Coronavirus Pandemic

[Perkiomenville, PA] – The American Association of Birth Centers is already seeing evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic will place unmanageable stress on the current maternity care system. Freestanding Birth Centers are experts in providing maternity care to low-risk pregnant people.

Freestanding birth centers can work collaboratively with hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic to reduce the overwhelm on hospital systems.

“We must recognize the capability of freestanding birth centers as healthcare facilities to provide wellness-based maternity care for low-risk pregnant people. If freestanding birth centers are not considered essential businesses and the providers working in them are not considered essential providers the patient load that was seen in the centers now shifts to the hospitals, who are already overwhelmed,” remarks AABC President, Amy Johnson-Grass, ND, LN, LM, CPM.

AABC has created a toolkit to help keep members and consumers up to date on the latest COVID-19 developments. Additionally, AABC will present a webinar specifically focused on challenges and solutions in providing care, practice algorithms and how freestanding birth centers and hospitals can work collaboratively in their communities. The webinar, “Managing COVID-19 in the Birth Center Setting” will be held on March 26th at 1:00 PM EST, and is free to all.
