AABC Elects New President, Board Members, Nominating Committee Members

Perkiomenville, PA.  The membership of the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC) has elected Amy Johnson-Grass, ND, LM, LN, CPM, President-Elect of the AABC.  Johnson-Grass is the first Certified Professional Midwife to serve as President of the Assocation.  Members also elected new Directors to the AABC Board of Directors and members of the Nominating Committee.

All new members of the Board will be installed at the AABC Business Meeting of Members at the 10th Annual AABC Birth Institute. As incoming AABC President-Elect, Johnson-Grass will serve one year with AABC President Lesley Rathbun, MSN, CNM, FNP and officially become President at the AABC 11th Annual Birth Institute in Anchorage, Alaska in 2017.

"I am thrilled to have Amy as our president-elect. She has been a tremendous addition to the Board already and I am looking forward to seeing how she continues the growth of all aspects of the organization,” said President Lesley Rathbun. “She is a strong and creative woman who runs both a successful business and practice. We are lucky to have such a well-rounded leader.”

Johnson-Grass is the founder, owner & director of Health Foundations Family Health & Birth Center (HFBC) in St. Paul, Minnesota. She also worked as a clinician at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis in their Integrative Medicine Department.

Currently Johnson-Grass serves on the AABC Board of Directors and sits on the Executive Board. In her community, she has been a member of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Midwifery Board for a number of years and currently is a member of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Naturopathic Doctor Board. Johnson-Grass is workshop faculty for "How to Start a Birth Center" workshops. She is adjunct faculty at Bastyr University and Birthwise Midwifery School and HFBC is a preceptor site for midwifery students. She has also served as a site visitor for the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers.

“My passion is to empower and help support the infrastructure of AABC to encourage a continued increase in birth centers nationwide. I am interested in continuing to help organize the tools and resources available through AABC to help make birth centers successful and support the needs of AABC members. As an advocate for birth centers, I recognize the impact an organization can make through legislative efforts both on the state and national levels,” said Johnson-Grass.

Barbara Norton, MN, CNM, ANP was re-elected to a second term as Secretary. Norton is the founder and owner of Geneva Woods Midwifery and Birth Center in Anchorage, Alaska. She also chairs the AABC Webinars Committee.

Christy Peterson, MSN, CNM was re-elected to the AABC Board in a the new position of Director. Peterson is currently a midwife in Lacey, Washington where she attends home and birth center births with Around the Circle Midwifery at The Birth House. She is completing her term as Alternate Director for the AABC Board. She also serves on the AABC Finance Committee, Bylaws Committee and Diversity Task Force. 

Alice Taylor, MPH, CNM, NP was elected to a Director position. Taylor is the co-owner and co-founder of Bright Eyes Midwifery and Wild Rivers Women's Health LLC in Gold Beach, Oregon. She currently serves on the Industry Relations Committee.

Jennifer Gallardo, CPM, LDM was elected to Alternate Director. Gallardo and her husband currently own and manage Andaluz Waterbirth Centers with three locations in Oregon as well as MamaBaby Haiti in Vaudreil, Haiti. She currently serves on the Government Affairs Committee.

Ann McCarthy, MSN, CNM was elected to the Nominating Committee. McCarthy is a midwife at The Midwife Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has served as Clinical Director since 2010. McCarthy currently serves on the AABC Program Committee.

Aubre Tompkins, CNM, MSN was re-elected to the Nominating Committee. Tompkins is the Clinical Director at Mountain Midwifery Center in Denver, Colorado .
