1. IRC Office Hours - What's your break-even?

2. AABC Birth institute session spotlight

This year the Birth Institute will feature a 2-part series on shared decision making and informed consent.

Part 1 -  Informed Consent in an Integrated System: From Patient Interaction to Litigation
This general session will address the legal basis of informed consent and significance of shared decision making in an informed consent context, how to practice informed consent in a community birth setting, common informed consent issues (Vitamin K, VBAC, Breech, Waterbirth, GBS, postpartum hemorrhage, drug testing, and transfers), compulsion and coercion, how to best document informed consent, and how informed consent comes into play during malpractice litigation. Presented by attorneys Emily Fernandez of Wilson Elser and Indra Lusero of National Advocates for Pregnant Women, Elephant Circle, and the Birth Rights Bar Association.

Part 2 -  Shared Decision Making: Using Evidence-Based Information for Crucial Conversations
This clinical breakout session will use case study reviews to ask the question was consent complete?  Quality of care, evidence-based informed consent, communication and shared decision making will be discussed as case studies are reviewed.  Presented by Mark Shwer, MD; Cheryl Bradshaw, RN, BSN, IBCLC; Jenny Fardink BSM, LM/CPM-TN; Jackie Griggs, MSN, CNM, IBCLC; Madi Grimes, CDM, CPM; and Cheryl Heitkamp, MS, APRN, CNM.
