1. NASEM Releases New Consensus Study Report Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access and Choice

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine published their latest consensus study report Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access and Choice on Thursday this week.

The release of the 266 page report was accompanied by a webinar, a recording of which will be made available in the coming week.

In introducing the report and the poor status of U.S. maternity care, committee chair Susan Scrimshaw stated, "A woman today is significantly more likely to die in childbirth than her mother." This comprehensive report finds that no birth setting is risk free but better access to care, quality of care, and care system integration can improve safety for women and infants during birth.

AABC is collaborating with our fellow midwifery organizations to synthesize these findings and develop recommendations for our members and birth advocates.

2. New Dates Added for AABC Birth Center Focused NRP Provider Training

AABC has added new dates and locations for the AABC Birth Center Focused NRP Provider Training.

  • March 13, 2020 at Health Foundations Birth Center + Women's Health Clinic in St. Paul, Minnesota
  • March 23, 2020 at the Atlanta Birth Center in Atlanta, Georgia

These all-day courses will feature skills stations that focus on repeated practice of initial steps, ventilation, and compressions until muscle memory is well-developed for these skills. All aspects of NRP will be covered in the skills stations, including use of T-piece resuscitators, LMAs, intubation, medications, and UVC placement. The instructor will also help you navigate introduction of T-piece resuscitators and other possible new skills, and practice all scenarios in ways you would be likely to encounter in out-of-hospital birth.

Limited spaces are available for the events in Minnesota and Georgia.
