AABC Issues Position Statement "Maintaining the Integrity of the Birth Center Model During Crisis"

Tuesday, May 5, 2020   (0 Comments)

Today the American Association of Birth Centers issued the position statement "Maintaining the Integrity of the Birth Center Model During Crisis."

With the COVID-19 pandemic, birth centers are experiencing increased rates of demand for services, and others are looking to open new birth centers to meet this demand. AABC has received inquiries from birth centers asking if consideration has been given to loosening risk criteria or allowing certain interventions given the crisis.

The freestanding birth center model is founded on evidence-based standards for care. For the integrity of the model, and the safety of the families served, it is imperative not to deviate from the established Standards for Birth Centers, even in times of crisis. Additionally, birth centers should review and modify protocols to adapt to safely providing care during the pandemic.

Thank you to the task force that developed the statement: Madi Nolan Grimes, CDM, CPM; Ann McCarthy, MSN, CNM; Moira Tannenbaum, MSN, APRN, CNM, IBCLC; Alice Taylor, MPH, CNM, NP; and Kate Bauer, MBA.
