1. AABC Introduces New Toolkit Resources for Birth Centers

AABC has found that toolkits are a valuable way to empower birth centers with the information, tools and resources they need for optimal practice.  This year, AABC has added several new toolkits on a variety of topics.  AABC toolkits include:

  • COVID-19
  • Risk Management + Sentinel Events
  • Coordination + Collaboration with EMS for Safe, Timely Transfers
  • Birth Center Contracting
  • Engaging Employers, Contractors + Payers

2. California's Justice and Equity in Maternity Act Ready for Governor's Signature

A new day is dawning for Californians.  The California legislature recently passed the Justice and Equity in Maternity Act (SB 1237) which removes the archaic requirement of physician supervision for nurse-midwives.  The bill now awaits Governor Newsom to sign it into law.

California faces a critical obstetrician shortage and significant race-based disparities in maternal and infant outcomes. This legislation will increase access to midwives and midwifery-led care and will improve sexual and reproductive health care access, equity and outcomes in the state.  California is one of only four states to still require physician supervision for nurse-midwives. The bill will replace the physician permission to practice requirement for nurse-midwives with language that promotes collaboration and team-based care.

Both AABC and the AABC California Chapter have supported the passage of this important legislation.

3. AABC Business Meeting + Open Forum Set for September 16th

Wednesday, September 16th: 1:00PM ET

New this year the AABC Business Meeting + Open Forum will be held online 2 weeks before the AABC Birth Institute. Historically, this annual meeting of the membership has been held at the AABC Birth Institute, AABC's annual convention. With the conference pivoting to online, AABC leadership looked at how to conduct this important meeting and increase access for members.

At the Annual Business Meeting members learn more about the association's activities and bring motions before the Board. Motions passed by the membership are recommendations made to the board for discussion and decision-making.

The Open Forum is an opportunity for members to talk about whatever is on your mind. The AABC Board will be there to actively listen to your concerns.

Members may propose a motion for the Business Meeting or a discussion topic for the Open Forum using this online form.

Registration is required to attend the AABC Business Meeting + Open Forum. Register here>>
