Due to the generosity of donors, AABCF established a grant in 2014 to assist birth center applicants with up to 50% of accreditation fees due to the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC) for (1) birth centers that are working towards accreditation for the first time and (2) birth centers that have been accredited and are subject to the new and temporary "grandma payment."* The AABCF will have the exclusive authority to determine all grant guidelines, criteria, timelines and awards, and will monitor all grants.

Who can apply?

To qualify a birth center must have:
    AABC membership
A demonstrated financial hardship to pay 100% of the CABC accreditation fees
A demonstrated capacity and a plan to complete the accreditation process with the intent to maintain accreditation.

Special consideration will be given to birth centers that demonstrate one or more of the following:

A commitment to serving low income women and/or women on Medical Assistance
Situated in a rural or low-income area
Annual gross revenues of less than $100,000
A commitment to foster public education about birth centers

How does one apply?

The FIRST STEP is to submit a letter of intent by October 1, 2014 that answers the following questions:

What is the name, address, website, and contact name for your birth center?
What year was your birth center established?
Is your birth center an AABC Member?
Why do you need financial assistance in applying for/maintaining CABC accreditation? (150 word limit)

Submit your letter of intent online or email it to

What is a grandma payment and what are the changes in accreditation fees?

On October 1st the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC) fee structure will change from a pay as you go model to a new fee model comprised of an initial registration fee required to begin engaging in CABC accreditation and monthly subscription for enrolled birth centers.

In this transition period, the CABC is using a system of prorated payments, called "grandma payments," to bring accredited birth centers up to date with the new fee structure. A center's "grandma payment" is calculated to ensure that each birth center contributes its fair share to get started and only pays for the new benefits upon receiving them.

For more information on these CABC changes and how your center is affected please contact CABC Executive Director, Rosemary Senjem, 612-226-5101,
