Mickey Sperlich

Mickey Sperlich, PhD, CPM, is an assistant professor with the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. She is also an experienced midwife and researcher who studies the effects of trauma and mental health challenges on women’s childbearing and postpartum experiences and outcomes. She is the author of several articles on the effects of trauma during the perinatal period, as well as the book Survivor Moms: Women’s Stories of Birthing, Mothering and Healing after Sexual Abuse, which was named the 2008 Book of the Year by the America College of Nurse-Midwives. Sperlich has taken part in several trauma-focused perinatal studies and is co-author of a psychosocial intervention for pregnant survivors of abuse, the Survivor Moms’ Companion.  She is committed to finding ways to interrupt intergenerational cycles of violence and psychiatric vulnerability and promote recovery for women and young families.


Neel Shah

 Neel Shah, MD, MPP, is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and director of the Delivery Decisions Initiative at the Ariadne Labs for Health Systems Innovation.  He is an expert in designing, testing, and spreading system interventions that improve the safety, affordability, and experience of patient care.  As an obstetrician-gynecologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center,  Dr. Shah cares for patients during critical life moments that range from surgery to primary care to childbirth.  Prior to joining the faculty at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Shah founded Costs of Care, a global NGO that curates insights from clinicians to help delivery systems provide better care at lower cost.  He is listed among the "40 Smartest People in Healthcare" by Becker's Hospital Review and has been profiled by the New York Times, CNN, the New England Journal of Medicine, and other outlets for his efforts to demonstrate how over-treatment can harm patients.


The Very Reverend Doctor Michael James Oleksa, ThD, born in Allentown, PA, is a graduate of Georgetown University (Washington, DC), St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (Crestwood, NY) and the Orthodox Theological Faculty of Prague (Czechoslovakia).  He has spent nearly fifty years serving as a parish priest, college professor, seminary and church administrator, and a consultant in the field of intercultural communications for private, state and federal agencies.  His five-part PBS television series, Communicating Across Cultures, has been widely acclaimed. The recipient of numerous awards from academic and government institutions, Father Michael has been named “Alaskan of the Year” and an “Elder” by the Alaska Federation of Natives. He has authored five books and dozens of articles focusing on Alaska Native History and cultures.


Hermine Hayes-Klein, JD, opened the Law Offices of Hermine Hayes-Klein, LLC in 2003 and has since then had a great focus on reproductive rights issues.  In 2008, she served as a Research Fellow and the Director of the Bynkershoek Research Center for Reproductive Rights at The Hague in the Netherlands.  During her time at the Bynkershoek Institute, she also organized the first international conference on Human Rights in Childbirth which took place in May of 2012.  She founded the Human Rights in Childbirth organization in 2013 with the mission to clarify and promote the fundamental human rights of birthing women.  Today, Hermine continues her work at her law offices and provides consultation on healthcare law, including legislation concerning the rights of women around childbirth and breastfeeding.
