Putting Research in the Hands of Birth Center Staff

Wednesday, April 19, 2023
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (EDT)
Category: Webinar Wednesday

Research is a familiar and valuable concept to midwives and birth centers. Not only are the care models evidence-based, but community birth advocates and clients are also used to having to do a little digging into where or how to find needed resources and services. Data reporting and program evaluation are not just for universities – birth centers and midwifery clinics are perfectly capable of conducting investigations that provide further insight into the beneficial impact of their care models and demonstrate this impact to funders and collaborators.

The purpose of this webinar is to review some basic concepts and strategies in conducting health research, including study design and ethics, with a particular focus on how birth centers can leverage their own data to inform and promote the services provided. Dr. Sanders will also present on her own research, which started as a quality assurance project in a freestanding birth center.

Sarah Sanders

Dr. Sarah Annalise Sanders is a Postdoctoral Associate at the School of Public Health (Epidemiology), focused on applying reproductive justice frameworks to studying birth experiences. Her research interests were born at Pittsburgh’s only freestanding birth center, where Dr. Sanders worked as an administrator between 2013-2018. She is currently working on publishing her dissertation research (“Spatial analysis of birth center locations and service catchment areas in the contiguous United States: An application of Public Health Critical Race Praxis”), as well as contributing to multiple other equity-focused projects.

Dr. Sanders has been an active member of the American Association of Birth Centers since 2018, serving on the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and Research committees. She is specifically committed to expanding access to the birth center model, which includes investigating the historical origins of obstetrical racism and uprooting white supremacy in midwifery care and the community birth context.
