Presentation Description

While we see improved birth outcomes for Black birthing folks within the birth center setting, there is still much work to be done to make giving birth safe for Black communities. In this interactive webinar, we will discuss:
  • The racial disparities that still exist for Black folks in countries where midwifery is the standard practice
  • Addressing the reality of implicit bias in a system that has ingrained racism into us (no matter how much work we do to de-program it)
  • Steps to take to start fostering a safer birthing environment for Black folks in your birth center
  • Storytelling - We invite all attendees to bring their own stories and experiences! This is a space for us to share openly and learn together. We all have something to add to the narrative, whether we recognize it or not. We welcome your presence and your stories.

Webinar Wednesday is a FREE benefit of AABC Membership. Guests may attend for a fee ($45). Registration is required.

Presenter

Dr. Leslie Farrington

Dr. Leslie Farrington is a retired OB/GYN from New York City and a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine. She brings a powerful and personal perspective to the conversation on racism in medicine, shaped by her experience growing up in an interracial family during the civil rights era of the 1960s.

As a Black physician, Dr. Farrington has seen firsthand how maternal deaths are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the preventable harm faced by Black communities due to systemic racism. After retiring from practice, she created the ACTT curriculum—a practical, advocacy-based approach that helps birthing people and their supporters communicate effectively with healthcare providers and advocate for respectful, person-centered care.

In 2020, she co-founded the Black Coalition for Safe Motherhood, working with birth justice advocates and community leaders to share ACTT across the African diaspora and advance health equity for Black families.
