AABC Certified Birth Assistant Training

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

AABC's Certified Birth Assistant Training establishes a standard for quality birth assistants.  Successful completion of the course ensures employers and birth center clients that the birth assistant has ample knowledge and training to assist with labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

The AABC Certified Birth Assistant Training is comprehensive and robust, consisting of modules of presented content, demonstration videos, HIPAA and OSHA compliance training, an in-person skills assessment, and observation at out-of-hospital births.  The following are required elements of the course:

  • 15 Modules of presented content
  • Skills and drills videos
  • HIPAA and OSHA compliance training
  • Proof of NRP and CPR certifications
  • Attendance at 4 out-of-hospital births*
  • In-person drills and skills assessment

*Challenge course students attend 2 out-of-hospital births

evidence-based Curriculum

The course draws from numerous philosophies and modalities to create a recognized standard for quality birth assistants trained to support the midwife and family during labor, birth, and the postpartum period.  The curriculum was designed to train birth assistants in the midwifery model of care in the out-of-hospital setting.

SKills drills and assessment

After completing the didactic portion of the course, students will arrange an in-person skills assessment with one of AABC's approved birth center sites.  AABC has skills faculty in the following areas, with more to come:

  • Anchorage, AK
  • Clarksville, TN
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Fort Worth, TX
  • Gold Beach, OR
  • New Brunswick, NJ
  • Minneapolis, MN
  • Chapel Hill, NC

Attendance at births

Students are required to observe 4* out-of-hospital births and submit case study reports on each of the births to a trained AABC mentor.  The student will debrief with their mentor after each birth and as needed during this period of attending births.

*Challenge courses students are required to attend 2 out-of-hospital births.
